“Flamenco meets Gypsy music” – world première With: Spanish and Hungarian musicians, dancers Maria del Mar Serrano Rebollo, “Maria Serrano”, was born in Seville, Spain. She began to dance as a child. She was taught by Seville’s outstanding flamenco teachers – José Galván, Los Gitanillos de Bronce, Juan Manuel, Farruco – who immediately recognised her exceptional talent. In 1993 André Heller, the popular Austrian director, invited her to his show, Magneten. Maria won the hearts of Germany, Austria and Switzerland with her appearance. The News of Austria dubbed her “the voodoo queen of flamenco”.
In 2000, she appeared at the Seville Bienal de Arte Flamenco, setting up her own group, Compańia Maria Serrano which debuted with RITMO Flamenco-Cubano. The work was created by one of the leading choreographers, Manolo Marin. In 2001 Entre Flamencos was staged, then in 2002 Maria Serrano created her own Carmen adaptation. In 2004 they appeared at the Budapest Spring Festival with Flamenco Meets Tango. Since its establishment the Compańia Maria Serrano has made numerous highly successful appearances in cities of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Turkey, Finland, Denmark, Holland, Taiwan, Macedonia, Poland, Mexico and Italy. |
