CO-AX (world premiere) Performers: Csaba Horvth, Gerzson Pter Kovcs, Veronika Vmos Choreographed by Gerzson Pter Kovcs The CO-AX is the second part of Cult, the previous performance of TranzDanz. The three-person performance is centered around the active and extroverted human being as "the cosmic axis holding the world, the benevolent and omnipotent energy preaching life". The CO-AX is about the intersection of the vertical axis of the individual and the horizontal axis of time, about their co-operation and about man acting in a spiritual and physical space. Szeged Contemporary Ballet WHISPER OF ANGELS Music: Gavin Bryars Choreographed by Myriam Naisy (France) BLA BARTK: THE MIRACULOUS MANDARIN Choreographed by Tams Juronics The name and works of Myriam Naisy are not unknown to the Budapest audience, however, this time we have the chance to see a new side of hers: instead of playful amusement we are to expect the work of a lyrical contemplative artist: the calmness through which thoughts and emotions flow freely into the deepest regions is provided by the highest technical skill, the whirling dynamism of gestures and the simple, proportionate presentation of symbols. "To be a mandarin is a state of mind. It can happen to anyone who reaches a level of love and desire beyond which the rules of the outside world cease to exist, beyond which his or her life follows nothing but the laws of an existence driven by inner, sexual motivations... I am studying the inner events of a stormy love and the creation of that fundamental desire which enables a human being to - if necessary - tear apart the world around him or her and cross the line of realities." Teatr Cogitatur (Poland)HLDERLIN'S FOUR DREAMS (CZTERY SNY HLDERLINA) Directed by Witold Izdebski Performance in English Strange energies swept the elderly Hlderlin towards his last love, Susette Gontard. Their relationship was deeply condemned by their contemporaries: this might have been the reason for the fatal, almost exalted transfiguration of this affair. The stigmatized love turned the poet's world upside down: he fought his last battle against his own emotional turbulence. "The performance's atmosphere is like that of a dream, in which there is no logic, there are no events. After all it does not make a difference what tricks Izdebski used when putting together this play so full of illusions, hallucinations and feelings of growing threat. The performance is precisely formulated and the actors are doing a wonderful job" - says a Polish critique about the Hlderlin. The company has been operating in Katowice since 1981. Similarly to their earlier works, the Hlderlin's Four Dreams is a spectacular production of special atmosphere: the Polish critiques awarded it with the Golden Masque for its spectacularity. STRAVINSKY: LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS "There is no development in my version of Spring Sacrifice, there is no cause and result, there is only simultaneity. It is as if I was dealing with very moment in which the first germ of life appears. The performance is the analysis of this moment" - says Marie Chouinard, the dancer-choreographer about her piece which has become successful all over the world. She combined the Stravinsky score with the fine noise-music of the contemporary composer, Robert Racine. Marie Chouinard's intimately spiritual Sacre is a celebration of Life, what is more: it is a celebration of the inevitable anarchy, which prevails over all that lives. Compagnie Marie Chouinard (Canada) LES SOLOS 1978-1998 The selection of solos from the period between 1978 and 1998 is a real challenge for the viewers. The intimacy of Chouinard's solos created from a mixture of the movements of dancers, human beings and animals is shocking: the clip-like, fearless scenes of the loners of the stage are a real treat for the connoisseurs. the retrospective selection gives an insight into the creative work of two decades but it is as if we saw the moving series of solos of the figures of one, single performance. Company Bozsik Yvette - Katona Jzsef Theatre AUTUMN IS HERE, SOON WINTER WILL COME (world premiere) STRAVINSKY: LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS (world premiere) Choreographed by Yvette Bozsik The desire to cross the borders of genres and ages is a constant characteristic of Yvette Bozsik's work. The first piece of her new two part performance was inspired by the world of Chekhov's Three Sisters, which is an "impressionistic landscape of transitoriness, and the nice and empty world of Russian heroes and heroines". Since its 1913 premiere the Spring Sacrifice has been one of the most often treated pieces of music in the history of choreography. Bozsik's version - performed by a company enlarged with the members of the Honvd Tncsznhz - is a pagan rite exploiting some elements of Hungarian folk traditions. The main characters of the spectacular dance are embodied by Yvette Bozsik and Tams Vati. Smn Theatre HOUSE OF DEER (Hungarian FP) Stage- and costume designer: Alice Purcell Music: Andrs Monori, Gbor Pusztai, Tams Kovcs Performers: Alice Purcell, va Magyar, Simon Vincenzi Choreographed by va Magyar Upon the request of the Battersea Arts Centre the Smn Theatre prepared its latest performance in London with British and Hungarian dancers. The House of Deer was inspired by George Solti's last Hungarian interview in which he said that earlier he had thought Bartk had written the story of his own life in the Cantata Profana, but then he realized that his (Solti's) fate was also identical with the story of the boys who turned into deer. "This is when I started thinking about what parallels could be found between the ballad, Bartk, Solti and the attempts of contemporary Hungarian artists to find their place and means of self-expression." - says the choreographer who has been working more and more in Great Britain lately. The performance of the Smn Theatre paraphrases the parable of the ballad into a personal life's story. (Supported by The British Council) further performance: 31 October

Central Europe Dance Theatre THE 'ANNA KARENINA' RAILWAY STATION The Central Europe Dance Theatre is 10 years old Choreographed and Directed by Istvn nekes Based on the Drama by Andrs Nagy The 10 year old Central Europe Dance Theatre presents a performance based on a drama by Andrs Nagy and choreographed by Istvn nekes, the company's founder and arts director. The dance that can be seen in the multiply divided space of the Bethlen Kortrs Tncmhely is a special mixture of film and theater. The motion of the dancers - some of whom speak themselves, while others are dubbed by actors - is disrupted from time to time and the story is continued on the screen which is built into the setting. We are witnessing the unique combination of contemporary dance and contemporary theater in the evocative little theater of Bethlen Square. TRISTAN TZARA: THE GAS HEART (world premiere) Directed by Gbor Goda Choreographed by Gbor Goda - Ildik Mndy "The gas heated heart is strolling in the large area. All the other characters come and go ad libitum. This is the single and greatest fraud of the century in three acts - it will make those nerds happy who believe in the existence of genius. The performers are requested to pay such a degree of attention to this play as a masterpiece of the weight of Macbeth or Chantecler deserves and at the same time to handle the author - who is not a genius - with little respect and to realize that the text lacks seriousness and does not contain any innovation in the field of stage technique." (Tristan Tzara) The Artus Theatre and the Israeli Vertigo Dance Company has maintained a strong connection since 1995 when the two companies presented a joint performance the title of which consisted of their names. Four years later the transcontinental formation is here again - with a 21st century reinterpretation of The Gas Heart, a production Artus first performed in 1987. (Artus-Vertigo production. Supported by: Soros Foundation, NKA, the Cultural Committee of the Municipality of Budapest, 77 Electronika, Ministry of Culture & Education - Israel, Municipality of Jerusalem, Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Israel, Embassy of the State of Israel, Gerard Behar Center - Jerusalem, Suzanne Dellal Center for Dance and Theatre - Tel Aviv) further performance: 1 November

CONTEMPORARY FOLK-DANCE EVENING The choreographers applying the traditions of Hungarian folk dance reinterpret the ancient rules, forms and language: they are building the modern from the elements of the traditional. Their language of forms is deeply imbued with the brave and adventurous intention of innovation just like the knowing appreciation of traditions. The Contemporary Folk-Dance Evening has become a traditional program of the Autumn Festival.
