Sch. op. 15d Gy�rgy Ligeti: Ten Pieces for Woodwind Quintet L�szl� Tihanyi: Schattenspiel P�ter E�tv�s: Korrespondenz - Szenen f�r Streichquartett B�la Bart�k: Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion Formed in 1980, the Ensemble Modern has created a school. The 25 member orchestra from Frankfurt with its excellent soloists gave a new form and perspective to dealing with contemporary music. The essence of the new method is that the musicians of the orchestra decide about the events of its inner life, about the new members, the conductors to be requested, the compositions to be played and about the co-operation with composers they think of highly. The commitment of the musicians to this spirit, the originality of the programs, the openness to new techniques of playing and new forms of performance and finally the intensive co-operation with the conductors and composers give a special weight to the ensemble in the musical life of Europe.

Robert van Sice is one of the outstanding marimba players of our age. Although only ten years have passed since his first individual performance, he has already played in several important music halls of the world from Japan to Norway and he has held master courses in more than 20 countries. He has been the Head of the Percussion Department of the Yale School of Music since 1997 and the percussion-professor of the Peabody Conservatory since last year. Together with the members of Amadinda he held a course at the Bart�k Seminar of Szombathely this summer. (Supported by the Music Board of NKA)

One irrationality (the Jewish-laws) will be at the mercy of another irrationality (musicalization). Paradoxically, however, this does not amplify irrationality, but unexpectedly everything will be elucidated very sharply. Free Fall tells the story of a Jewish family. And still, for me it is not primarily about the Jewry, not even about the Hungarian Jewry - it is about a dead-end street of Hungarian history, among the victims of which not only Jews but gentiles can be found as well - although in a very different way. You must have noticed that faster music sounds better in dryer halls, while slow music sounds better in places the echo of which is larger, like that of churches. The acoustics of the hall has a determinative role in the sound of music. [...] Brass. The Metal Space - my acoustic piece - would like to draw your attention to the acoustics of the hall so that after long and probably intuitive listening you would concentrate on it." The Composing Competition of the 1997 Autumn Festival marked the first appearance of the ensemble. The aim is to support contemporary music - most of which is turning into a "last century" thing - and to maintain day-by-day contact with the pieces that are being born continuously. The UMZE is shaping the philosophy of its concert program on this basis. The honorary conductor of the ensemble is P�ter E�tv�s, from the works of whom the ensemble prepared a CD in April 1999 upon the request of the BIS record company. This year P�ter E�tv�s is not only the composing conductor of the closing piece of the concert but also the editor of the evening.

A mystic - but maybe not as a guesser of the world beyond human reach but as a merciless fanatic of searching for truth and of penetrating into the unapproachable depth of the soul. His music is inexhaustible self-scrutiny, which gives us a chance to face ourselves through its painful honesty. Kurt�g's art is continuous communication, one of the basic experiences of which is the possibility and threat of our the ability to speak. When he bases his music upon poetic words - which he does so often - he is looking for a starting point from which he can spring and a goal to which he can lead his audience. Recently - after P�ter Bornemisza, Rimma Dalos, Attila J�zsef and Franz Kafka - H�lderlin and Beckett meant this starting point for him: the "fool" locked up in a tower and the Irishman exiled from his language. One singer, a couple of instruments, whispers, screams, hallow emptiness, overwhelming excitement. A rite of strict rules with distressed participants. A small and fragile world where everything is so small and void. But all the small things grow and expand into threatening proportions, they are trying to crush and kill us. The only way out is that we have to be able to tell and sing it. We have to search - but not search for something: 'Step by step / nowhere / no one / knows / how / small steps / nowhere / stubbornly'" (P�ter Hal�sz) (In joint organization with the Sz�chenyi Academy of Arts and Literature, with the support of the Music Board of NKA, the Editio Musica Budapest and the Cultural Committee of the Municipality of Budapest)
