Susan Sontag arrived in besieged Sarajevo in 1993, where she staged ‘Waiting for Godot’. The documentary features interviews with actors and creators of the play to present a moving account of life in Sarajevo under siege, where Susan Sontag’s presence brought a powerful burst of life. The black and white photos of Sarajevo under siege by prominent photographers Milomir Kovačević and Paul Lowe and their striking simplicity served as a visual inspiration for Nihad Kreševljaković’s film.

Don’t Cry For me Susan Sontag in Sarajevo is dealing with the famous Susan Sontag’s arrival in besieged Sarajevo in 1993, where she staged the play Waiting for Godot. Extremely simple documentary form, focusing on interviews with thirteen participants and witnesses of the play, this film presents an extremely emotional account of life in Sarajevo under siege, in which the burst of life was ignited by Susan Sontag. Visually based on black and white photos of two prominent photographers of Sarajevo under Siege – Milomir Kovačević and Paul Lowe this film keeps simplicity as the experience worth to be followed even today, more then 20 years after the siege. “Europe is, and always has been, a place of barbarism, a place of civilization, too” is quote of Susan Sontag, who opens the film Don’t cry for me Sarajevo – Susan Sontag in Sarajevo.
The documentary is shown in the original Bosnian language with English subtitles.
